In 1919, Denton Stephens plunges into the Marias Des Cygnes River in Ottawa, Kansas when a failed bridge swallows up his wagon. Out collecting eggs on her ranch nearby, spirited Haven Christiansen comes to his rescue and offers a cot on her father's back porch for his recovery. While she rehabilitates his injured draft horse, Denton draws up a business plan with Garrick Christiansen to trade room and board for a temporary hauling base until the bridge is rebuilt. The construction crew's arrival adds an unwanted threat, causing Denton to add security vigilance to his chores. The addition of a truck for hauling and a dog for guarding shift matters in his favor, but his courting of the cook could use a little help. For a traveling man, Denton forgets to protect against having his heart waylaid, but discovers a haven despite his pressing business plan.
